You can look at different marketers – they seem to do very different things, and still get away with it. It is a fascinating journey where you learn about marketing and how to make sure your marketing works. When you start to understand it, it even gets easier to make the results you want.
Two things are for certain about marketing, your customers:
- They like it or they don’t
- They see it or they don’t
By adding some routines you can keep an eye on what’s going on. If you should do all by yourself, your day would be filled with all the tasks you really don’t have to take care of. When you combine what you do with some of the magic of technology you will have more control on how your marketing works. Your job is about making sure they like it and see it. That job gets easier when you add some sort of tracking.
But first: A couple of things will make your marketing better before you get to the step of tracking.
Content
You have to make sure that your content is about what you want to market. When you do your marketing you need to have an idea of what it is you market. It’s also nice to have an idea on how you want to do your marketing
Audience
When you know what you market, it’s time to make sure that you market in the right places. If you want to sell your fish, Sahara is probably not where you want to start your marketing. Maybe you get there later, but you have to make sure that your marketing works before you start working in the more challenging areas of your business. What you know something about is always a good place to start.
Daily Tasks
When you do your daily tasks you want people to like what you do. You always have an option:
-
You can make the content you like, the way you like it, or
-
You can make the content you know your customers like, the way they like it.
This is maybe one of the major problems many marketers have. At the same time, this is very important for your business. The solution is actually very easy, when you see it. Like everything, it’s easy when you see it, but hard when you don’t. Can you see it?
One rule is above all. It has to be mentioned, you start where you are and that’s your first step to where you want to be. This applies to everything you do in your business. Always start with what you have and work from there.
Tracking
This is where tracking comes in very handy. By tracking what you do, you see what works and what doesn’t. You keep what works and change what doesn’t and life smiles at you. You can be the best content maker in the world and not be seen. Your hard work will not be recognized, not because it’s bad, just because no one finds it. When you track your content it’s easier to see if you found your audience or not. As long as you know that your content is good, you don’t have to worry so much about the content. Then you focus on how to find the right audience for the right content. Do the necessary search for where they are and make sure that you market in the terms they want to find.
You probably have the answer to the question above. The moment you make your content about what you like in a way you like, you also know where to find the people that likes what you do. They are your primary customers, probably. That is also a good place to start learning about tracking, you get the feel on how things work before you take the step into something bigger and more difficult to target.
If you want to find out more on how I learned about these things and a whole lot more, where you also get weekly trainings on all important parts of marketing. Just fill in your name and email address and you will find everything you need to grow your business to the next level.

A View On How To Make Sure Your Marketing Works
I think you are absolutely right in that we tend to run into conflict when we could either make something that we know we would like or try to take the market into account and make something that we think our customer base would like. I think the answer is to do both. We obviously want to enjoy what we are doing, but we also know that we need to be able to make a living off of it to be able to enjoy it in the longer term.
What do you think of this assumption? Am I on the right track here?
Most definitely Alec,
the more you enjoy what you do, the better job you do. It goes with everything we do in life. When someone makes you do something because they want it, it might look like your idea, but it will at some point lose your interest because it wasn’t your idea. Your audience or customer will notice this and your work will not be as good as you want it to be.
I would say that looking far an easy way, just to make it easy, is a wrong way of starting online marketing. It’s important that you start with something that you believe in yourself, something that keeps your interest and probably have been interesting for years. The audience you attract will have a similar interest and can take advantage of what you are offering. This should make it a win-win situation.
Hi Odd
Finding your audience is a vital aspect of getting your message in front of the right people.
This is a challenging thing to do, but with something that interests you , you can usually find a few different hangouts or sites where like-minded people gather.
You can use their questions and answers to help with your own ideas.
You mention tracking being important, are you using the google master statistics for your tracking, or do you have some other tools?
Cheers Wade
Hello Wade,
thanks for dropping by 🙂
Marketing is a lot about finding your audience. When you focus on who you are talking to, you are more likely to hit the people that are interested in what you have to say. Using different hangouts or sites is of course a great idea for two reasons, you get ideas on what topics are interesting at the moment and you get to know how your audience like to take the right actions on what you are working on.
Tracking helps you get some statistics on what works and what doesn’t work. When you get good at hitting what people want, you will notice everything in your tracking. Depending on what kind of business you run, Google statistics do a great job and helps you a lot. I use Google, it’s free and gives me valuable information of the actions happening around my websites. I also use a tracker, giving statistics inside the Wealthy Affiliate. This platform really has all you need to make sure everything moves smoothly. the tracker gives me even more details regarding my marketing than Google, so by using both I feel I have the control I need to make sure my sites are moving in the right direction.
Hopefully my answer help your question, Wade. In the end, the better you understand your audience, the more pleasure you have by admiring the great results in the tracker.
Keep working on your tracking and do the necessary changes, and the sun will always shine 🙂
I think audience is certainly key on this subject – a lot of marketers who come online to earn a living don’t really take this on board before setting out.
The internet is a goldmine of individuals but find the right ones for you can be challenging. Where do you concentrate your marketing efforts? How do you locate the audience that best works for you online?
hi Chris,
There are of course, there are of course a lot of different approaches that work. With all the training within Wealthy Affiliate, you can find your way of working. The closest interesting answer to your question is actually that I like to be present where I have an audience. Social media is a good start, and when you make your marketing according to the advice in the trainings, you will find your audience as long as you keep to what you market.
Locating your best audience may take time. Starting by communicate with people with the same thought and ideas as you have, give you a lot of ideas where to get the audience. You should start with the social media you are familiar with, and work your way from there.
To find the audience that work best for you online, try to answer the questions you will have your audience to answer. Good luck on your project :-
The goal for writing for your readers and customers should always be quality.
I find that just being myself and write as if I am face to face with someone and having a conversation is the way to be.
The words just kind of flow and I always want it to be interesting and not boring. You just have the reader glued to the screen.
Know who you’re writing to and keep it flowing. After you write something, read it back to yourself. Your marketing will provide the benefits.
great advice there, Rob. Everything natural appeals to your audience. The way you express yourself is at the same time you showing who you are. Your voice is a part of the defining of you, which again is a part of how you gain trust from your customers. There is something about getting the readers glued to the sceen that I would be careful about. If they don’t trust you completely they might get the feeling of being tricked. It doesn’t have to be a big problem, but being aware of it, might make sure that what you are saying don’t become a misunderstanding.

I like the article. I think the biggest key to being successful in your chosen niche is making sure to communicate and understand your audience. Understand what your audience wants, and give them what they want. The process would be summed up simply by, give, and you may get. What is your best strategy for finding out your audience? How do you convince them to drop you a comment in order to access their opinion and spin some of your content based on that?
Hi Jacob,
You are addressing the two most important questions, how to find the audience and how to convince them to drop a comment. They are connected and there are too many ways to “attack” the issues to mention them all here. Strategies will always be suggestions, anyway. You need to implement your way of working according to what your audience want.
One of the main challenges is about finding the right audience, in the first place. You need to know what your audience are searching for. This is just the starting point, though. They find what you produce, but the way you present your material is the key to engage them in a way that makes them want to leave a comment.
People are people, they respond to what they find when they see it can benefit them, in some cases at least. If they disagree, you would get a lot of comments you don’t want, but if you ask them, you engage them to give their opinion. This is a way of showing respect for your audience as individuals, not just someone you want to drop a comment.
Every niche have their own language. It is based upon what people know about the subject, in general, not the specialized version. More people know just a little than the amount of people knowing a lot. This should give you a few ideas on what level you want to engage your audience, and from that point you can start testing, testing and testing. Asking yourself what you would be commenting on your own material, might be a great way of getting some of these ideas.
I wish you luck in your ongoing process and look forward to hear about your success 🙂
